TIKI Binders and Planners
Please take this time to look through the binder and student planner (inside) that your child is bringing home. They will be using these EVERY DAY for the remainder of the school year. The binder and planner serve several purposes.
We refer to the binders as our T.I.K.I. binders. Within the binder, you’ll see a class roster, our schedule, a copy of their ipad login information, and a math reference sheet. It will also include their student planner and a “Take Home” folder. This binder will go home and come back each day, and parents are expected to look through it each night AND initial the planner.
One purpose of that student planner is to keep your child organized and develop task completion skills. Your child has been asked to use the planner every day. Each assignment given in class should be written down in the planner. Every night, the planner should be looked at AND signed. If your child has difficulty completing assignments on time, it may become necessary to take further measures.
Another purpose of the planner is to be used as their daily behavior chart. I use
checkmarks to note the number of times I have interacted with your child. The marks are
recorded in their planner. My behavior checks are as follows:
One Check = brief interaction between student and teacher
Two Checks = additional interaction, minor loss of privilege
Three Checks = complete loss of privilege/ possible office referral
The following are the three areas we focus the most on:
Being Safe
Being Respectful
Being Responsible
Within each of these areas are a variety of skills. (Respecting others, Following Instructions, Completing Tasks, etc.) You may see an abbreviation next to a checkmark to remind your child (and inform you) why the checkmark was given.
One final purpose of the planner is to be used as a communication piece. Since
you are looking at and signing the planner daily, you may also choose to add comments
or questions on specific days. ***Just be sure to remind your child to show me the note, as I do not often see planners until the END of each day. I may also jot a note in the planner for you to see. This is another reason your child should be showing you the planner EACH night.
All of these will help your child to be more independent, responsible, and successful in fifth grade.
